When we first started our business I met a man who was a fund raising events promoter. It came up in conversation that he was having a private party in a Manhattan hotel for about 15 people. Here are some tips for getting your small business more exposure. This is the first post on our new series of Small Business Exposure for your Handmade Greeting Cards or any other product/service.

Almost every town has a local paper and we mean local, not a mainstream publication yet. Get your local town/village paper and find out who the writers are and for what sections. Make contact, you must self-promote. This may seem uncomfortable, but look at the bigger picture of getting your artwork or small business idea exposure. Tell the writer who you are, how long you have lived in town, what you do and why it is a great local story. Send them a card or sample of your small business product. Offer some incentive, free writing/shipping etc. Keep in mind they may turn you down, however maintain and build the relationship. Be sure to make contact again several weeks before any Holiday, it could be the perfect time for your story/business. Relationships are everything, maintain them.

The most important tool in creating a successful small business is Relationships.
Your relationship with everyone from your paper suppliers,local printer,business associate,friends and family all contribute enormously to your success.

For example we have found that when you are researching companies to provide your paper needs, the right approach can often get you many free samples to experiment with and often use for a few final products. What a great cost/benefit ratio. You then of course return the favour with future business and personal recommendations for that company. The same goes for your local printer, they will often professionally score all your paper at little or no cost if they believe in the relationship. They also come in handy when you need bulk cutting, your own business cards etc.

The primary rule is to try to under promise and over deliver while always being upfront and sincere about what you are trying to accomplish. We will be posting more tools and tips to help with your success and we wish you all the best.

For years we designed beautiful handmade greeting cards that were a labor of love. Some designs could be done in about an hour and some took as long as 18-20 hours. We started about ten years ago when the internet was still fairly new and developing quickly. We gave little thought to keywords and website ranking as the Art and Creating always took precedent. As a result our cards were beautiful and our sales were almost entirely local,(which is a good place to start).

About two years into the business we turned our attention to keywords, search engine optimization and other not-so artistic, but very important matters. With a few focused changes our business began to rank higher and higher on search results and sales began to come in from all around the world. Local business soon became the minority percentage as we sold cards to England, Israel, Morrocco, India, Lithuania and more. We were truly astonished. We now rank in the top 10 on google for the keywords 'handmade greeting cards' and 'handmade birthday cards' as well as the top 50 for 'handmade wedding invitations'. Meditation and Relaxation
As with most self improvement tools, I always try to share what is free and what has worked for me. Meditation has been one of my greatest tools by far, it is so easy and free too. For me, I like to keep it simple, meditation is simply consciously choosing to relax. It can be a quiet walk in Nature, or on the couch in a quiet room at home and many things in between. The more you do it the easier it becomes. You do not need to burn incense,chant in a strange language or sit in an uncomfortable position, although you certainly can if you want to. The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to just get started somehow. I found a great place to download a free,truly free, meditation cd online. This was one of my first great finds and I am happy to share it with you. I get nothing for referring you,really and this free download also comes with a free email course if you want it.

Meditation and Relaxation

As with most self improvement tools, I always try to share what is free and what has worked for me. Meditation has been one of my greatest tools by far, it is so easy and free too. For me, I like to keep it simple, meditation is simply consciously choosing to relax. It can be a quiet walk in Nature, or on the couch in a quiet room at home and many things in between. The more you do it the easier it becomes. You do not need to burn incense,chant in a strange language or sit in an uncomfortable position, although you certainly can if you want to. The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to just get started somehow. I found a great place to download a free,truly free, meditation cd online. This was one of my first great finds and I am happy to share it with you. I get nothing for referring you,really and this free download also comes with a free email course if you want it.

Memory Loss, Affirmations and Improved Health

While looking for a way to improve my failing memory, my wife discovered the concept of Affirmations in a book called Mind Control by Jose Silva. The concept is simple and free and it was literally the beginning of changes in my life that I never thought I would see. This technique was credited to Emile Coue a French Physician from the late 1800's to early 1900's. Emile used this to help thousands of people to cure themselves of as many ailments.

This is the first process I used and of course you can and should change the words as you go forward to suit your unique situation.
1- Repeat to yourself at least 20 times, aloud or mentally,
"Everyday in every way I am getting Better and Better".
Do this at least twice a day for at least 21 days.

That is it. This simple and free concept will begin to change your life for the better in ways that your inner self know are best for you. I still practice some variation of this everyday and it has been almost 5 years now.

My greatest breakthrough was that after about six months I simply stopped all alcohol consumption, no cravings or desire existed for it all, it was truly inexplicable for me.
I then went on to permanently lose 25+ pounds, eat a much healthier diet by choice and feel overall improved health. I began to meditate on a regular basis and gain great control of my thoughts. Oh, and yes not only has my memory loss completely reversed itself, but I now remember things from childhood that astonish me.

I hope this simple concept will benefit you as well.

Take a few minutes to list all of your regular monthly purchases. You may want to start with your bathroom products, hair,skin,nails,mouth, etc. Then list your health items, cold & flu medicines, pain relievers, prescriptions, supplements, etc. Think about you kitchen next, cleaners, paper towels, soap, etc. Exclude food and produce for now. Estimate your total.

Next, list all of your irregular purchases that occur every couple of months or so. Some examples are: Cosmetics, pet supplies, automobile stuff, socks, underwear, undershirts, towels, bedding, books, movies, music, stationery, gifts for the holidays, birthdays, anniversaries etc. The more you think of these items the more you will remember. Estimate your total.
